Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), a leading pharmaceutical company, has announced that it is launching the first FDA-approved Female Viagra. This new version of the drug, Addyi, will be available to women who cannot take or have not taken the drug at all for at least three months, or are taking other medicines for erectile dysfunction.
Addyi, which is already available as an injectable drug, will be available to women who have a pre-existing condition (such as an enlarged prostate) or are on a treatment with other medicines to reduce blood pressure and heart rate. The FDA approves this drug if it is effective in treating an approved indication. Addyi is not available for those who have not been prescribed Addyi or those who are not currently taking Addyi.
Addyi is a treatment for multiple sclerosis, or MS. Women with a spinal cord injury, neurological disease, or spinal cord injury can take Addyi at any time during treatment to treat the pain and enhance the recovery of their ability to do their job.
“We are excited to offer Addyi to women who cannot take Addyi or who are not taking Addyi,” said Janet Woodcock, M. D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “This is a significant step in bringing Addyi to market, and it will make it accessible to women in their mid-20s, if they are not already able to take it.”
The drug will be available to women who cannot take Addyi or who are not on Addyi, Woodcock said. Addyi has been available since 2012. Addyi was approved by the FDA in July 2012 and has been available since late June 2010.
In April, the FDA approved the use of Addyi for the treatment of women with severe to moderate hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and hypoactive sexual desire disorder in adults. The drug is not approved for use in children under the age of 18 years.
The FDA approved Addyi in March 2010. The agency has also been working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to review and approve Addyi for pediatric use. The agency said that Addyi is not approved for use in children and adolescents.
The FDA is advising consumers to avoid using Addyi or any other medication for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder or a disorder with sexual appetite in the absence of a medical condition or treatment plan. The drug is not for use in women and is not approved for use in children.
“Today’s approval marks an important step in the efforts to bring Addyi to market,” said Sheryl Kingsberg, M. D., director of the National Library of Medicine, which is the first FDA-approved drug for women with MS, the female genital tract disorder. “This approval marks a major step forward in the efforts to address the root causes of this disorder and help women make informed decisions about their health.”
